On the eastern edge of Abu Dhabi, the Khalifa Park mixed-use development serves as an impressive welcome symbol for traffic entering Abu Dhabi via the iconic Sheikh Zayed Bridge.

The extensive development includes the five-star Park Rotana Hotel, an impressive serviced apartment complex and 30,000sqm of prestigious office space. Fronting Khalifa Park, the carefully detailed design takes advantage of the unique parkland surrounds.

ML Design were appointed to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the site, and it was our collaborative nature that saw the project come to life. We also delivered integrated design solutions and architectural services for all buildings in the development.

Our design team undertook the master planning and conceptual design for the whole complex, as well as providing the detailed architectural design for the hotel.

The biggest design consideration for our studio was the fact that this was the first stage in the initial transformation of Khalifa Park. This design was going to transform the site from a vacant desert into one of Abu Dhabi’s top visitor destinations that served as a gateway to the city.

Through ML Design’s master plan and unique design solutions, the Khalifa Park development was the winner of Best New Hotel Construction and Design, Abu Dhabi 2011.

Our design used simple rectilinear building forms to meet expectations relating to budget, spatial efficiency and constructability. We combined all these requirements to optimise views onto the adjacent green space.

The result: an appropriate showcase of contemporary architecture that acts as an entry statement to the city with a backdrop of impressive greenery in what was previously an empty desert site.
