Sugarworld Shopping Centre Refurbishment

Edmonton, Cairns

Client: ISPT

Year: 2015

Sugarworld Shopping Centre is a local precinct located approximately 15 kilometres south of the Cairns CBD. Sitting within the southern growth corridor of Edmonton, the centre was in desperate need of an impressive revitalisation.

The restoration of the local shopping centre was designed to give the hub a more inviting feel to locals – prompting them to visit regularly and shop at the 12 specialty retailers.

Having worked with ISPT on previous shopping centre projects in Brisbane, ML Design was chosen to lead the design of the project. Our innovative design strategies and knowledge of projects of a similar scope allowed us to create clever ideas that transformed the centre while keeping construction costs low.

ML Design worked to improve the configuration of the shopping centre, revitalise uninviting external aspects and increase the visibility of the centre through signage.

Being a local shopping centre, the revitalisation project presented a number of unique design challenges. ML Design had to work to a tight design and documentation program to keep the project running smoothly. We also had to ensure the construction program was completed prior to Christmas trading – a tight deadline to keep. This meant we needed to quickly respond to client requirements and the builder’s information requests – otherwise the project timeline would be pushed out.

ML Design’s comprehensive design solution delivered a transformative result for Sugarworld Shopping Centre. Our design included façade treatment, placemaking, landscaping and signage – all working to create an inviting local community atmosphere.

Our skills and expertise in the retail field allowed us to deliver our results on time and under budget. The project was completed prior to the busy Christmas period, which meant more foot traffic to enjoy the revitalised and vibrant shopping hub.
