ML Design’s track record in delivering strategic design solutions and our collaborative approach to design and documentation is what saw us appointed to the design team for The York. Our studio collaborated closely with the client to ensure we delivered positive design outcomes.
The main challenges arose from the site constraints and the strict interpretation of an outdated local government development overlay. The design solutions were tailored to ensure the Local Authority was happy with the volume of the final solution and all apartments received natural light and breezeways.
The York’s site is very large and ML utilised this space to ensure the best yield for the client. This meant our designs were structured around the development of four residential buildings grading in height from three-storeys in the south to 9-storeys in the north.
The blocks are separated by over 10 metres internally and a pedestrian path winds through the site in order to connect the neighbourhoods either side of the development. The final design solution uses a limited palate with clear definition of mass and voids delineating each apartment. The result has been a great commercial success, and raises the bar for developments in the area.
