Yas Island Centro and Rotana Hotels

Abu Dhabi

Client: Rotana Hotels

Year: 2011

Yas Island is Abu Dhabi’s premiere leisure lifestyle and entertainment city centred around a Forumla One racing circuit and theme park. To accommodate the crowds that were forecast to come with the maiden F1 race, the site needed two trackside hotels as a part of the Golf Plaza Hotel precinct that were to be completed and operational in time for the race.

The two hotels – a 308 room four-star Rotana Hotel and a 259 room three-star Centro Hotel – share a common car park and service podium in order to maintain operational efficiencies. The two buildings have unique architectural and arrival identities to strengthen their brand differentiation.

ML Design’s ability to collaborate and produce effective design solutions was what saw us appointed to this exciting project. Our design ensure that the project is in line with the strict environmental standards for all Yas Island developments.

The biggest challenge for this project was the tight deadline we had to work to. We needed to have two hotels operational before the first Formula One race – a deadline that required extensive collaboration and smart design strategies.

We also considered the fact that the two hotels have different brands and therefore different architectural and design requirements. This meant our team needed to work closely with both brands in order to come up with two designs that worked well both individually and together.

To meet the tight deadline, ML Design established an on-site office on Yas Island. This helped us deliver innovative design solutions quickly and efficiently while allowing collaboration with local interior designers and project managers. This strategy delivered the best commercial outcome.

The buildings have been designed to reflect and promote Rotana Hotel Groups extensive quality of service, while the aesthetic features incorporate elements of Arabic design combined with a contemporary style of architecture.
